The thrust of this book is the very opposite(the Old Testament is essential for a balanced Christian life. This text seeks to explore with the student how the Old Testament still functions as God's Word, "profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness" (2Ti 3:16 RSV).

The basic theological issues of the Old Testament are as relevant now, at the end of the 20th century, as they were when originally penned. The reason lies in the unchanging nature of what it means to be human. The fundamental questions of human existence are theological questions(questions which are the same at all times and in all cultures. Questions like: Who am I? How did the world begin? Is there a God? What is God like? How can I know and please God? What will happen to me and the world? The essential message of the Old Testament speaks to these enduring questions, so the passage of centuries has not rendered it out-of-date. This book is designed to give the reader a grasp of the overall message of the Old Testament. It also attempts to show the significance of the message for our own day at the end of the twentieth century.
